President Abraham Lincoln, a man who battled depression, said that most people are as happy as they make up their minds to be. Happiness takes work.

It requires reconsideration of past events and current circumstances to find the smallest of things to be happy about.

Many times, a quick nature walk, or afternoon drive can bring us moments of joy. Listening to the birds or children playing can drive away depressive emotions. Sometimes a beam of sunlight on your face can change your perspective.

Purpose is primary. If you don’t sense purpose in what you do for a living, find a volunteer option where you do find purpose. Without purpose, we are distant from the positive rhythm of life.

Nobody can be happy all the time. There are too many hurtful things on this planet. There are too many people out to harm others. You will encounter challenges in your lifetime but focusing on positive things, and finding purpose every day, can help you keep happiness as a strong part of your being.
