Counselors often meet people who are stuck in the past, ruminating and overplaying the scenes of their lives that cause suffering and enduring pain. When people say to “get over it”, they are asking for the impossible. You cannot heal from past hurt, until you understand the value of the pain.

Nelson Mandela, who spent 21 years as a political prisoner, said that he had never lost in his life, only learned lessons. All suffering bears some type of lesson. Those who must battle cancer are better equipped to help others going through the same pain. Those who have lived through marriages to controlling spouses can now see the signs for the next relationship and warn others about signs in people they are building relationships with.

Suffering is never pleasant. It isn’t meant to be. Suffering teaches us and makes us live on a higher level if we are not completely crushed by it.

When you see others suffering, help them. Doing so elevates your mood and places you at a level of a higher vibration. We are designed to help each other, and our own pain diminishes when we ease the suffering of another person.
